Bobby Whitlock was Derek & The Dominos' keyboardist and also one of that group's important songwriters and vocalists. His pen helped Clapton on "Why Does Love Got to Be So Sad," and his genuinely soulful voice could crank out R&B, gospel, and blues as if he were much older than he appeared. Whitlock caught the ears of important industry vets and musicians, including George Harrison, whose All Things Must Pass included Whitlock's fine keyboard playing and backing vocals. This set collects two of Whitlock's four solo albums from the '70s: Bobby Whitlock and Raw Velvet, both from 1972. Andy Johns produced the self-titled set, where musicians such as Jim Keltner, Eric Clapton, George Harrison, Klaus Voorman, Chris Wood, Bobby Keys, Jim Price, the remaining Dominos, and Delaney & Bonnie all made appearances on a modest collection of soulful tunes true to their roots. Raw Velvet was more of the same, with Clapton, Carl Radle, Jim Gordon, Harrison, Price, and Keys returning to give Whitlock the support he deserved.
