[Edit]From Eddie Harris and Les McCann to David Sanborn and Bob James, strong pairings have long been a tradition in popular instrumental music. Saxophonist Boney James and trumpeter Rick Braun first recorded together in 1994 on the latter’s Beat Street. The two continued to guest on one another’s albums and even co-led 2000’s successful collaborative project Shake It Up. “Batucada (The Beat)” was written by Marcos and Paulo Valle and made famous by Sergio Mendes & Brasil 66. James and Braun reunite for their take on the samba classic from 1966. Here, the original’s airy arrangement is transformed into a downtown funk excursion complete with punchy horns, layered bass lines, and generous cowbell.
