For “Maker of Love” (off his 12th album, The Beat), the tenor saxophonist/multi-reedist cowrote and recorded with contemporary R&B crooner Raheem DeVaughn. This master class in tasteful seduction starts with a brief spoken-word passage from DeVaughn before he breaks into a plaintive falsetto with James’ present but unobtrusive tenor lines providing support. DeVaughn’s voice is suavely self-layered; he sings rapid lyrics over repeated phrases and occasional harmonies. The single fades out peacefully, leaving listeners yearning for more.
