This album delivers exactly what the title promises: virtuosic gypsy music. Lajos Boross is part of the gypsy music scene in Hungary, but predates the revival of the '90s somewhat (with groups like Muzsikas and Taraf de Haidouks, though the latter is actually Romanian). There are aspects of gypsy jazz present, and larger ensemble playing in the style of soundtracks. That said, the music is less rousing than much of the revival sound, but contains a heavier emphasis on slower, more deliberate violin playing (note the use of "violin" rather than "fiddle"). This is very classy gypsy music, packaged into a Lawrence Welk-esque format, ready for consumption. Pick up the newer items from the current stars first, but keep this one on the list if you're intrigued by the facets of gypsy music.
