With expectations riding high after the success of his debut EP, Boy from Brazil retreated into the studio and meticulously crafted Pointless Shoes, and the results easily surpass the quality of his first release. The immediate comparisons to a multitude of things from the '60s and '70s are inevitable: crunched-out fuzz-laden guitars equally drawn from surf music and post-punk, crunchy drums and vocal deliveries owing equal influence to the B-52's and the Cramps. Two years in the making, Pointless Shoes is all this and more wrapped in a 58-minute excursion through pulp novels, vintage horror movies, and Russ Meyer flicks rubbed with Tigerbeat6's signature digital polish. But much to Boy from Brazil's credit, he never overly reaches for any one influence or directs his homage to any one particular era. It's wonderfully erratic and a challenging listen for even the staunchest of electronic music fans.
