Boyd Senter was a gaspipe clarinetist whose tonal distortions sounded a bit silly at the time and were instantly dated. His best records are on this CD, which has his 1928-1930 output, but Senter (despite strong technical skills) is usually the weakest part of the performances. Fortunately, he is joined on many of the selections by top players including Tommy Dorsey, Jimmy Dorsey, Eddie Lang, and (on four songs) trumpeter Phil Napoleon. The music is listenable, but would actually have been much stronger if Senter was not present, or at least if he had updated his style past 1922!
