[Edit]Brand Nubian has experienced so many phases and lineup changes that it's nearly impossible to summarize their career in five songs, and yet this edition of the Rhino Hi-Five series captures the group’s essence. With two songs each from the trio’s first two classic albums and one song (“Word Is Bond”) from 1994’s underrated Everything Is Everything, the collection touches a lot of bases in a short time. The band’s early years are represented by “Wake Up,” a subversive party jam, and “Slow Down,” with an unlikely Edie Brickell sample that affirms the group’s unique musicality. “Love Me or Leave Me Alone” is a reminder that the Nubians were never properly acknowledged for their wealth of relationship songs. Their legacy is more tied to the uproar of “Punks Jump Up to Get Beat Down,” a still-potent cocktail of funk and malevolence. Brand Nubian was many things to many people at different points in time, but these five songs translate their enduring qualities: swagger, knowledge, and ingenuity.
