B.O.N.N. Apétit! marked the return of Azita, the frontwoman of the mid-'90s avant-punk group The Scissor Girls, to the music scene with a new band, Bride of No No. This group picks up where the Scissor Girls ended, but it brings more order within chaos. While the Girls mostly played free punk-noise improvisations, Bride of No No's sound relies on angular rock songs with punk spice, strangely soaring off-key vocals and strong lead guitar. B.O.N.N. Apétit sounds at times like The Ex or an all-female Klezmer-less version of Kletka Red. The four-to-five-minute songs have a no-wave quality to them: simple melodies, brutal delivery. But it doesn't stop there: the musicians bend the song structure, deconstruct it. The last track, "At the Stranglehold Ballet" is almost 15 minutes long and, with its repetitive middle section, takes the band directly into Sonic Youth's playground. B.O.N.N. Apétit takes the raw energy of The Scissor Girls' output and channels it into a more orderly (using the term loosely) frame to great results. ~ François Couture, Rovi
