In case you missed it, Toby Keith made his silver-screen debut in the 2006 movie Broken Bridges portraying a country singer. Though the film played more like a sappy soap opera, the accompanying collection of songs is pretty awesome. The soundtrack begins with an impassioned title track where a somber- toned Keith duets with the velvet-voiced actress Lindsey Haun over a string section and a Dobro guitar. Fred Eaglesmith follows with the rootsy and mellow, "Thinking About You," an enjoyable little tune that recalls the finer moments of J.J. Cale's 1971 album Naturally. Haun takes center stage with "Broken," a hit ballad with a fervent performance that absorbs all the feeling and emotions of her character (a teenage girl who loses family in the war, but gains back the father who abandoned her at birth). The boozy shuffle of "Zig Zag Stop" seems to pay tribute to ZZ Top, and not just in the title of the song. Texas-toned guitars bend and wail over a rocking blues shuffle, making this one another standout. If you didn't see Broken Bridges, don't worry about it. Hearing Broken Bridges is more rewarding.
