If Brand New Man served as a skilled introduction to two honky tonk veterans, then Hard Workin’ Man shows the transformation of Brooks and Dunn into Nashville professionals. At this point, Dunn became the group’s defacto lead vocalist, due to his versatility and powerful presence. For “Hard Workin’ Man” and “Heartbroke Out of My Mind,” he employs a throaty groan akin to Hank Williams Jr., then turns around to voice the tender yearning of “She Used to Me Mine.” Brooks’ leads are less forceful but just as good. His gentle vocals are a perfect match for the folk-like strumming of “Texas Women (Don’t Stay Lonely Long)” and “I Can’t Put Out This Fire.” Still, the best thing about Brooks & Dunn is their unity. It’s not just the blend they achieve with their voices, but the larger sense that their bond as friends comes before their bond as working partners.
