Details

[Edit]

In just a few short years Buddy Holly wrote and recorded a sizable amount of rock ‘n’ roll classics that sound just as fresh fifty years later. With an economy of style, Holly forged a sound of teen angst with a small yet intensely tight band, and later with studio musicians who would wrap his heavily melodic ballads in sweet, careful arrangements. This collection pulls together Holly's entire career from his early recordings with Bob Montgomery to the Crickets' various permutations to his New York solo recordings and the "apartment tapes" that show he was hardly out of ideas when his career was cut tragically short in a plane crash. It's impossible to go wrong with songs as sturdy and unflinching as "I'm Gonna Love You Too,” "Oh Boy!," "Maybe Baby," "Rave On," "Peggy Sue" and "Learning the Game." Holly was deceptively simple with a casual delivery that made everything he recorded sound obvious and natural, as if these songs had always existed. His influence on future generations can be heard throughout.
