We're darn grateful that Bush Tetras keep coming up for air—even though the tempo has slowed and they now skew a little more "rock" than they did back in the hallowed days of the 1980 single "Too Many Creeps." Cynthia Sley's voice is more rock diva than cool growl on these tracks—recorded way back in 1998 and held up in record company legal limbo—but the funk-fueled tunes still possess a visceral edge. All original members play on here; sadly, bassist Laura Kennedy passed away in 2011. Happy is only the band's second studio LP; Bush Tetras released Beauty Lies after reforming in 1996, and their early days produced only a scattering of singles and EPs. A slightly different version of "Nails" appears on the 2007 collection Very Very Happy, but the remaining tunes here haven't been heard in studio form before. The percussive "Chinese Afro," the murky and swirling "Swamp Song," and the slashing funk of "Trip" and "You Don't Know Me" show a band in fine creative form. "Pretty Thing" is a startlingly lovely song in which Sley uses her voice in ways we're not accustomed to. Bush Tetras can still surprise us, 30 years on.
