Details
[Edit]For the Texas band’s second album, they achieve a warmer studio sound that begins at the piano for the relatively straightforward “Creep In the Cellar” that nicks the chord progression to the Kinks’ “All Day and All of the Night” and throws a chaotic violin on top until it’s time to check out. And that’s how the Butthole Surfers succeed in being one of the ‘80s most enduring bands: they understood the importance of creating wild new textures within familiar frameworks. The cover of the Guess Who’s “American Woman” is among the band’s most inspired, making other versions sound redundant. “Sea Ferring” delivers Paul Leary’s psychedelic guitar to crunch along with singer Gibby Haynes’ stream-of-consciousness craziness. But it’s “Perry” that connects on all levels, as the organ shifts in a psychedelic twist and Haynes howls in desperation. This edition of the album includes the previous Cream Corn From the Socket of Davis EP, arguably the band’s most concise and effective statement, containing the absolutely crazy and inspired “Moving to Florida.”
