Easily the most versatile hard-rock band from St. Paul, Minneapolis, Cain’s 1975 album was one of those amazing debuts damned to obscurity outside the Midwest upon its release. Of course A Pound of Flesh found its proper audience in the 21st century’s acid-rock fetishists with a 2003 reissue on Monster Records. “Queen of the Night” introduced the band with heavy riffage chugging over a bludgeoning rhythm section, but the salient talent surfaced in the singing. Frontman Jiggs Lee’s dynamic vocal range fell in between that of Queen’s Freddie Mercury and Ted Nugent, while guitarist Lloyd Forsberg and bassist Dave Elmeer provided some stellar harmonies for an anthemic arena-rock effect. Second track “Katy” revealed a power ballad in where Lee serenades his muse with an accompanying flute, muted staccato guitar, and some backing harmonies reminiscent of the band Kansas, while “Southside Queen” delves into richer guitar tones and a swampy boogie to play like a rootsy version of Boston. Similarly, “Heed the Call” rocks like Styx blasting bluesy biker-rock.
