Exercise in Humility is the debut album from emo rockers Canterbury Effect. The band seems to be flexing its musical muscles on the ten tracks found here, showcasing the yin and yang sound that many of their contemporaries have already mastered. The sharp, angular guitar parts contrast nicely with the clean and clear guitar it bounces off of, while the harsh vocals mask the sensitive lyrics found inside. The band is clearly enamored with this sound, which does hamper the album a little bit, if only because so many of the songs have such similar structure. But, overall, the band delivers some great songs here, from the poppy "Daniel" to the raging "Southbound" to the rather relaxed and swinging "Three Weeks." Emo fans should take note, as this is a good band with a lot of potential that has delivered an impressive debut album.
