Details
[Edit]This is an intriguing set that features a saxophone quartet in the lead while joined by a rhythm section, trombonist Jim McFalls, and (on some selections) a large string orchestra. The music is influenced by jazz and has some improvising and soloing, but it is also classical-oriented in spots. The repertoire is pretty wide ranging, with such tunes as "Camelot," "Night and Day," "Just a Closer Walk With Thee," "It Don't Mean a Thing," "Variations on 'I Got Rhythm'," "Flight of the Bumble Bee," and "Fugue Well-Tempered" being among the 19 selections. The players never quite cut loose, but the arrangements are colorful.
