The Capitol Steps' first Christmas album utilizes spoofs of their favorite Christmas carols. Although the cover indicates that George W. Bush, his family, staff, and Cabinet are targets, most of their songs are focused on general holiday topics. While this group can be hilarious, this CD has the effect of being rushed into production, as the parodies don't stick, like many of their earlier releases. One of the puzzling tracks is Mike Tilford's vocal in "Mel's Christmas," a piece intended to skewer actor Mel Gibson for his drunken DUI tirade against Jews, though Tilford's impression sounds more like Bill Clinton. One of the few highlights is "Away with the Manger," which lampoons pressure groups that try to make Christmas politically correct, if not trying to ban the mention of the holiday itself. Unlike most of their earlier albums, this effort was recorded without an audience and also runs under 30 minutes; as a result, it falls a bit short of being one of their essential releases.
