With a quality Captain Sensible hits collection currently unavailable, fans would do well to ferret out this roundup at the local record shop. Also released as Sensible Singles, A Day in The Life includes highlights from the singer's first two releases on A&M. The on-and-off-again Damned member stretched out on a run of '80s and '90s solo efforts, often producing fetching, widescreen pop-punk classics along the way. The mix here wends from the show tune and synth sheen of "Happy Talk" to the Sugarhill Gang-inspired new wave disco of "Wot." In between, the Captain hits his stride with heady pop concoctions like "It Would Be So Nice," "It's Hard to Believe I'm Not," and "Glad It's All Over." Many of the sophisticated arrangements brim over with snatches of Elton John, the Beatles, '60s pop, and even Pink Floyd. Thanks to the Captain's own considerable melodic and production skills, though, the tracks all come off sounding original. A perfect introduction to Captain Sensible's '80s heyday.
