Details
[Edit]Caravan were largely bypassed by American audiences, even though they were the Canterbury scene’s more accessible psych-prog band. (Soft Machine were the scene’s more difficult offering.) Caravan were gifted in their abilities to play complex music that required virtuoso chops. Despite criticisms of progressive rock’s innate coldness, Caravan's music is surprisingly down to earth and quite soulful, with lead guitarist and vocalist Pye Hastings able to convey great emotion in songs such as “Place of My Own,” “Ride,” “As I Feel I Die,” “Love to Love You," and the epic “Nine Feet Underground,” played here in a truncated 14-minute version. Though this collection doesn’t feature everything the group performed for the BBC, it’s still the best collection available; it focuses on the band's strongest period, with enough from keyboardist Dave Sinclair to keep things interesting. The nine-minute version of Soft Machine’s obscure “Feelin’, Reelin’, Squealin’” further shows Caravan's brilliance, versatility, and ability to play the music of their contemporaries.
