Details
[Edit]Besides his work with the highly acclaimed Italian Instabile Orchestra, multi-reedman Carlo Actis Dato is recognized for his keen improvisational skills while performing in various formats and group settings. This release captures the Italian jazz musician performing with like-minded American artists at various venues and a church during his jaunt across the United States. Dato has exploited his significant talents with the crème de la crème of the global jazz community. Here, the artist utilizes his baritone and tenor saxophones and bass clarinet for a series of trio, duo, and solo performances. He teams up with fellow multi-woodwind specialist Ken Vandermark for three largely pulsating and highly emotive pieces while also performing with drummer Dave Storrs and bassist Clyde Reed at a church in Portland, OR. Dato is a fiery improviser who knows how to convey a story or two in altogether garrulous fashion. A divergent outing, the saxophonist also aligns with Wayne Horvitz's keyboards-based EFX excursions on three pieces. The sonic characteristics tend to be a bit muddy at times. Nevertheless, Dato's noticeably brazen and uninhibited musings serve as the guiding light throughout these 13 highly charged works.
