Beyond the Sea

An odd album defying expectations and genres, Beyond the Sea incorporates many elements. The recording is divided into two loosely structured suites, the two-part "Sole Nero," which is an ephemeral, gentle offering; and "South Stories," an eclectic collection of seven tunes. Cattano plays soprano saxophone and flutes, and leads a quintet which includes some outstanding Italian jazz performers, including percussionist Antonio Moncada and trombonist Lauro Rossi, both of whom are highlighted to good effect. Little known guitarist Salvo Amore and bassist Daniele Patumi contribute mightily with some original, invigorating solos. The lack of focus caused by the range of styles detracts somewhat from the whole, but there is excellent playing throughout. The compositions and arrangements were written by the leader, who shows an ability to highlight the individual talents of his colleagues.
