Rapper Carlos Agassi released his debut album, The Amir of Rap, in 2000. The album contains samples of a number of international songs, including "Let's Groove," first performed by Earth, Wind and Fire; "On Top of the World," first performed by the Carpenters; as well as "Got to Be Real" and the tuneful "Reminiscing." There are also a number of Philippine-composed originals. While Carlos Agassi is supposedly the star of the album, a number of guest performers are heard, and without them, the album wouldn't have the same appeal. For example, joining Agassi on "Top of the World" is popular Philippine singer Jolina Magdangal, while "If I Had More" features Zsa Zsa Padilla. Many more guest performers take part, and it appears the album is the result of a collective group effort.

Actually, this is for the better, as Carlos Agassi isn't the most proficient of rappers. He raps in a soft, mellow voice that lacks the edge to make a listener take notice. His rapping sounds best when accompanied by a guest rapper who takes a harder-edged approach. Nonetheless, the instrumentation and production is impeccable, and the album, when taken as a whole, is enjoyable. Philippine originals "The Lover" and "Because I Want You" contain rapping as well as sweet melody lines and chorus, and the songs have international potential. The album is enjoyable, but one must remember that although the album is credited to Carlos Agassi, he is the least important member of the ensemble.
