There’s a lot of love to be heard on Casey James’ self-titled debut album—and that goes for more than its lyrics' romantic content. The 2009 American Idol finalist clearly has a passion for guitar-based pop/rock music, in both its rootsier and more contemporary varieties. He brings a sunny sort of enthusiasm to his performances, helped by Chris Lindsey’s well-tailored production and the songwriting contributions of such Nashville hitmakers as Bob DiPiero, Neil Thrasher, and David Lee Murphy. James proves himself an expressive and versatile guitarist, laying down bluesy dobro licks on “Drive” and launching into a Southern rock electric mode for “She’s Money.” As a vocalist, he shines on blue-eyed soul numbers (“Don’t Let’s Call It a Night,” “Love the Way You Miss Me”), as well as upbeat modern country tunes (“The Good Life,” ”Crying on a Suitcase”) and bittersweet Don Henley–style balladry (“Miss Your Fire"). James knows how to write, sing, and play tunes that are accessible to a wide audience. But more than that, he radiates the winning sincerity of a talented newcomer just hitting his stride.
