Cassandra Wilson is a soulful jazz singer who can mess with any genre and turn it into something worth hearing. Silver Pony is an ambitious genre-bending collection where she brings a funky groove to some straight R&B and blues. Wilson and band recorded improvisations from her concerts in Europe and brought them into the studio to flesh them out. Her extended take on the classic, “Went Down to St. James Infirmary” is a treasure of ensemble playing and dynamics. “Beneath a Silver Moon” makes great use of percussionist Lekan Babalola. Charley Patton’s delta blues “Saddle Up My Pony” gets a nine-minute workout. Paul McCartney’s “Blackbird” is brought to a sensuous climax, with insightful guitar lines from Marvin Sewell.  Big Star’s “Watch the Sunrise” is an unexpected choice, brilliant in its weave and featuring guest John Legend on vocals and piano. It fits in perfectly with a Billie Holiday track like “Lover Come Back to Me,” proving that Wilson gets superior results.
