On their debut release, Cause For Applause uses their New York City roots and a whole lotta swagger for a campy, sexy introduction to what they think is raw, punk-inspired rock & roll. The Hives and the like have done it on a grand scale with fancy studio production, but Cause For Applause doesn't go for that. This self-titled EP is strictly about sauntering guitar riffs that tango with frontman David Lloyd's lazy, thick vocal drawl. Cause For Applause don't mess around for the sake of rollicking and "The Wire" captures their reasons for such an attitude. Rockabilly licks and frenzied percussion on "Latest" are equally rough-edged, but the ghoulish Nick Cave-like howl on "Ode to Danzig" finds Cause For Applause in their element. This five-song EP is a stunning debut from this post-punk/experimental trio, who've already made their place in the post-grunge scene; an impressive change in N.Y.C.'s new millennium garage rock surge.
