La Mujer Pez

The year 2000 Spanish indie pop boom produced this group who presents a fine EP of Big Star-inspired pop. With a production and writing style that calls to mind the Creation records sound of the late '80s in some part, the group has no fear of the elaborate and wrap their deceptively simple songs in lush string arrangements. The previous album Suenaquento was produced by the Posies' guitarist Ken Stringfellow, if this is an indication of the pop perfection the group has in mind. Carlos Hernåndez takes the production and arrangement duties on this EP of more delicate acoustic-based songs. A cover of Spanish pop heroes Los Fresones Rebeldes is included, which sounds strikingly fresh and familiar. Containing two live tracks and a demo version of the single, this EP was intended as a transitional bridge between the more '60s garage sound of their first two albums and matured sophistication which would feature prominently on the subsequent third album.
