[Edit]The unique and spirited lo-fi music of the Texas group Charlambides earned them much critical acclaim in the underground press during the mid-'90s following their limited debut on Sitbreeze. Guitarist Tom Carter had spent time in the highly regarded, hardly heard indie psychedelic group the Mike Gunn before forming this group with partner Christina Carter on vocals. Internal Eternal is an exceptional collection of folk- and blues-tinged avant-garde psychedelia. Swirling guitar loops and distant drones create a mesh over which the exquisite vocals are draped like passing thoughts. Other songs have blurred and clouded quality in which the song barely surfaces through the haze of distortion and fuzz. Baring many similarities to the Young Marble Giants, the Charlambides similarly deal in a private music intended as late-night home-made invocations — and can similarly spark a voyeristic feel in the listener through their edgy and intimate music.
