With three horns and a piano-less rhythm section, the Charlie Kohlhase Quintet comes ready to blow on this, their second album. The material is cherry-picked from tunes long-standing in the band's set list, and Kohlhase's alto and baritone sax work make an excellent foil for Matt Langley on alto and soprano saxophone and John Carlson on trumpet and flugelhorn. John Turner on bass, and Matt Wilson on drums provide ample support, and despite the lack of a chording instrument behind all the soloing, the music stays cohesive throughout. Highlights include "But I Can't," "Bossa Macabre," "If I Could," "Knee Bop," "I Surely Would," and the almost 12-minute-long "Wraiths."
