[Edit]Charlie Kohlhase, a talented altoist who also has a very deep tone on baritone, is heard on his second CD heading a pianoless quintet that also features Matt Langley's tenor and soprano, trombonist Curtis Hasselbring, bassist John Turner, drummer Matt Wilson, and, on two songs, trumpeter Waldron Ricks. Their music is full of subtle (and some not-so-subtle) humor, consistently strong and dynamic soloing, variety, and plenty of adventure. One can hear the influence of Charles Mingus in spots, but in general the playing is quite original and fresh. Highlights include the Art Blakey tribute "Buhaina Checked Out," the somewhat demented "Cryogenisis," a swinging version of "The End of a Love Affair," and "Floating," which features the four horns without any rhythm section.
