[Edit]Having served time in the pop-punk group Busted and fronted alt-rockers Fightstar, Charlie Simpson pulled off an impressive reinvention when he made himself over as a solo crooner in the mold of David Gray. His debut, Young Pilgrim, is a wide-eyed collection of poignant indie folk that combines the dynamics of Snow Patrol with the acoustic introspection of Iron & Wine. Simpson's dusky baritone sounds world-wise against a backdrop of mellow arrangements: acoustic guitars, soft strings, brushed drums. "Down Down Down" smolders, its sooty opening riff building to a stomping finale, while "Parachutes" is vigorous and soaring. But it's songs like the charming, folksy "Farmer & His Gun" that show that Simpson is right at home in the stripped-down mode he's newly operating in.
