[Edit]Emerging from Rockford, Illinois in the mid-70s at a time when the garish spectacle of ‘arena rock’ was reaching pompous, self-important heights, Cheap Trick delivered the same guaranteed firepower with a nod and a wink. Singer Robin Zander and bassist Tom Petersson looked the part of sleek, blown-dry rock stars but guitarist Rick Nielsen and drummer Bun E. Carlos came direct from B-movie central casting. Yet, they performed as a perfectly synchronized unit, recording powerful hard rock tunes that had enough pop charm to please many warring factions. Their 1977 self-titled debut immediately established their playbook. Nielsen’s riffs are thick and crunchy with powerchords ready for the chorus, while Petersson’s bass runs up the neck for melodic support. Zander never attempts the histrionic squeals of his contemporaries, but sings heartfelt and sincere on songs that are often more than they initially seem. “Oh, Candy” sounds like a Valentine until closer inspection reveals an elegy to a suicide. “The Ballad of TV Violence (I’m Not the Only Boy)” covers mass murder. “Daddy Should Have Stayed in High School” deals with pedophilia. Cheap Trick turn darkness to light and driving hard rock into radio-friendly pop without sacrificing a whit of insight or integrity.
