Chet Atkins coaxed Les Paul out of retirement for this 1976 duo project, and it gives listeners a chance to hear two original electric guitar masters in symbiotic exchange. Atkins and Paul have had interrelated careers, but there’s no mistaking the distinctive tones of each player. Paul is all about chirping jazz runs and notes that ring like tiny bells, while Atkins is recognizable through statuesque fingerpicking with just a hint of country salt. Both players are known for their blinding dexterity, and “Caravan,” “Avalon” and “The World Is Waiting for the Sunrise” give their fingers the opportunity to fly. However, the album as a whole is more about mood than it is tricks. “It’s Been A Long, Long Time” and “It Had to Be You” exude a dreamy, celestial aura, and “Out of Nowhere” shows Atkins using a phase shifter, which gives his guitar a sublime liquidity. This project could have easily been plastic and schmaltzy, but Atkins and Paul comport themselves with so much class and taste that Chester & Lester becomes its own quiet kind of soul music.
