French duo Chevreuil is like European math rock's answer to the White Stripes. A guitar-drums duo, Chevreuil is even more rigorously conceptual than Jack White: guitarist Tony C. plays one guitar that's sent through four different amplifiers at the same time, each with a different combination of effects and pedals. He doesn't quite sound like four guitarists at once or anything, but at times, as on the spare, slow-building "Montacute," the setup results in some genuinely interesting sounds. He's matched by Julien F.'s complex, jazz-oriented drumming, which sounds quite a bit like the drummers in the aggressively experimental Rock in Opposition bands that were one of France's main musical exports in the late '70s and early '80s. The resulting music is almost cacophonous at times, but there's a structural logic here that recalls King Crimson at their most cerebral. In fact, strip one of Crimso's mid-'70s albums down to nothing but Robert Fripp's guitar and Bill Bruford's drums, and it might sound quite a bit like this stark but intriguing music.
