Flutist Chip Shelton alternates between several different instruments on this studio session consisting of primarily original works. He's accompanied by bassist Ron Carter, pianist Stephen Scott, drummer Lewis Nash, and percussionist Steven Kroon. Shelton doesn't restrict himself to one style of jazz, preferring to show that it is the ultimate sponge, able to absorb any musical influence. Shelton's infectious Afro-pop-flavored "Biko and Mandela," his reggae feature for bass flute ("In an Island Way"), his breezy but funky "Keep Hope Alive," and his adaptation of Chopin's Valse Opus 18 (featuring overdubbed soprano, alto, and bass flutes in a waltz setting) demonstrate how diverse his interests are. Also enjoyable are the Latin-tinged treatments of the standard "I'll Remember April" and Tadd Dameron's "The Scene Is Clean." Recommended.
