[Edit]Chris Byars has been a musician for almost all of his life, beginning his studies at seven and completing a master's degree at the age of only 20. With Byars having performed in a number of different settings in a supporting role, this Smalls CD (his second for the label as a leader, although he has recorded extensively for them as a sideman) proves to be an excellent showcase for his work. Accompanied by other frequent participants on Smalls' recording dates, including pianist Sacha Perry, bassist Ari Roland, and drummer Andy Watson, Byars displays a mature sound on alto, tenor, and soprano saxes in eight catchy original compositions. In some ways, the music is reminiscent of the heyday of Blue Note in the hard bop era, with the energy of a live performance even without an audience.
