[Edit]Trumpeter Chris Kase's debut as a leader takes time to warm up to. He has an attractive but not overly memorable tone and the same can be said for his harmonically advanced originals. However, Kase is a skillful improviser and his CD has just enough quirks and surprises to make it worth acquiring. A few of the selections utilize Bob Mintzer on tenor and Tom Varner on French horn but most find the trumpeter showcased in an acoustic quartet with pianist John Stetch, bassist Johannes Weidenmuller and drummer Adam Nussbaum. Kase sounds relaxed at all tempos, takes a variety of thoughtful but forceful solos and, by the end of this disc, will have won most listeners over.
