Details
[Edit]Schallplattenkonzert literally means "record concert," as in a performance on turntables. Indeed, turntables and records have been Claus van Bebber's favorite medium of expression over a few years. This one-track 3" CD was recorded in December 1992 and released in 1993 on Helmut Lemke's imprint Edition el C. Bebber uses surface noise, prepared records, and selected electronic and classical records sped up, slowed down, or played backwards in order to build an impressive multi-voiced piece. His music is not as anecdotal as Christian Marclay's or as abstract as most of Martin Tétreault's late-'90s output. It draws from the inherent cross-referentiality of the medium itself (surface noise, the recorded sound itself, the noticeable effects of speed manipulation) in order to create a metaphorical, alienated, and somewhat very poetical piece that transcends any and every genre (the records themselves are made unrecognizable) and self-destructs in the last 90 seconds. Any person interested in experimental turntablists like Marclay, Tétreault, or Otomo Yoshihide should try to track down this CD. ~ François Couture, Rovi
