"Bookshop Casanova" is a bright, propulsive track from the God Save the Clientele album that illustrates just how far The Clientele had moved afield from their lo-fi beginnings. However, this single includes two noteworthy b-sides that deserve more attention than being tucked away on the flipside allows. "The Fire" adds beautifully effective pedal steel guitars to a track that takes this U.K.-based group away from '60s pop influences and into the alt-country terrain also explored by the excellent Mojave 3. There's still a somber hangover to the grooves, but the vocals are clearer than ever, revealing a smoky ambience. "Girl from Somewhere" is even better, a mysterious pop song evoking the glory of The Byrds (circa 5-D through The Notorious Byrd Brothers), with glorious harmonies and instrumentation. The bass lines are full-bodied and luscious.
