[Edit]Dylan Baldi’s Cloud Nothings project was born in his parents’ basement not so long ago, where he made pop music shrouded in velvety haze. This, his first full-length recording made in a proper studio, is a surprise on several levels: Baldi’s not afraid to peel away the layers and let the listener soak in his youthful, imperfect voice (it’s stronger than past efforts indicated), and there’s a refreshing spirit and energy here that keeps Cloud Nothings moving briskly through to the end. The white-hot “Understand At All” and “Heartbeat” channel the late and much-missed Jay Reatard, while the charmingly titled “You’re Not That Good At Anything” and the sweetly melodic, Buzzcockian “Nothing’s Wrong” and “Been Through” have dangerously sticky hooks. The guitars and bass pulse with power-pop goodness, and the drums deliver tidy, spot-on punches. Tunes like the heart-tugging “Should Have” and the punky, deliriously effervescent “Rock” show Cloud Nothings moving in a most excellent direction.
