After listening to Cobra Starship’s fourth album, it’s difficult to believe that Gabe Saporta started the band as a joke. It’s not that Night Shades takes itself seriously, but some serious work went into crafting this near-perfect party album. The amorous power-pop opener “You Belong to Me” starts strong with romantic lyrics crooned over a synthesizer-dappled soundscape before Cobra Starship takes flight with “You Make Me Feel.” Featuring Britney Spears collaborator Sabi, this is a powerhouse of a dance- floor smash that plays like Lady Gaga going back in time three decades for the sole purpose of reinventing new wave. OneRepublic’s Ryan Tedder gives “#1Nite (One Night)” his King Midas touch which closely recalls Usher’s “DJ Got Us Fallin’ in Love.” Female French rock band Plastiscines make an awesome appearance on “Fool Like Me” — easily the catchiest tune here. The triumphant dance anthem “Disaster Boy” is another gem with Victoria Asher’s keytar and demure vocals giving the tune some ‘80s-inspired cool. Of the three bonus tracks, Shaggy’s cameo on “Anything For Love” is a standout.
