Details
[Edit]This young collaborative trio of twentysomethings seem to be doing exactly what they should be. Formed for a special performance in 2010 with drummer Stranahan, pianist Zalenski, and bassist Rosato, the three thought that gig went so well that they recorded and released Anticipation in 2011. Now they return with a sophomore effort that improves on that initial spark. The three work in the post-bop/straight-ahead tradition that recalls such trios as those of Brad Mehldau or an even jazzier version of The Bad Plus. Highlights include the tricky title track (driven by the piano) and the insistent bop of “Forecast.” Those seeking a light ballad can turn to the peaceful “Vio” with a nice intro by Rosato or the ruminative “Cyclic.” The band even tackle Thelonious Monk’s “Work” with a relatively solid degree of success. The band also give a shout-out to Fred Hersch on “Chorale” (another ballad) and legendary drummer Paul Motion on “Motion Sickness,” proving that they know where the music has been.
