The blithe, sometimes daft spirit of Coma's 2008-2013 run of EPs for Firm, Kompakt, and other labels remains on In Technicolor, the duo's debut album. Marius Bubat and Georg Conrad, assisted by an assorted cast who visited their Cologne, Germany studio — including vocalists Ada and Edi Winarni, and a handful of instrumentalists — have made one of the Kompakt label's more entertaining and less serious albums. It begins with a merry-go-round melody on the opening " Hoooooray" and concludes with an open-hearted thumper, "T.E.D.," that recalls the swirling wistfulness of Tycho's "Coastal Brake." In Technicolor gleefully veers from brawny disco-funk ("Maybach") to stern-yet-vivid techno ("Cycle") to goofy new wave pop ("Les Dilettantes") to sweet instrumental synth pop worthy of the Morr Music label ("#"). There's even something of a nod to Kompakt's old shuffle-tech division on the galloping, slightly loony "Maximal Minimal." Although there's much to like about the brand new material, the pre-album single "My Orbit" is the standout, one of the album's few fully formed tracks. Its chugging, classic-meets-modern Euro-disco blissfully spirals heavenward.
