A big dog in the world of independent hip-hop labels, New York's Nature Sounds has released records from the likes of Pete Rock, Ayatollah, Immortal Technique, Blu, Dilla, R.A. the Rugged Man, and countless others. Released in 2003, Con-Vexed sports 20 tracks from the likes of MF DOOM ("All Outta Ale," "Bells of Doom"), ex–Def Jux futuristic rappers Cannibal Ox ("Handle That"), and Wu-Tang Clan's Masta Killa ("The Day After"). Nontraditional production and hyper-lyrical rhyme schemes dominate. None of these songs are exactly chart-topping party-starters, but they're still pretty tight. Though it's mostly NYC-centric, we also get winners from Bay Area favorites Zion I ("Spinning") and Atlanta's I Self Devine ("I Want It All"), plus "Dro Grown" from Nashville's Count Bass D and "I Smoke" courtesy of ex-Pharcyder Bootie Brown. For the most part, this is a quality sampler of postmillennial indie rap.
