[Edit]The Coolies' rags-to-riches (and back again) epic, Doug, is a satiric jab at that staple of 1970s music known as the rock opera. The title character is a skinhead who slays a transvestite short-order cook, makes a fortune by publishing the victim's cookbook, falls prey to drug abuse and paranoia, and ultimately winds up back on the streets. The story is told not only through a progression of songs which poke fun at sacred cows like the Who, John Lennon, Led Zep, and even the Replacements, but also via an oversized comic book drawn by Jack Logan, first known for his Pete Buck Comics, before becoming an acclaimed singer/songwriter in his own right in the 1990s. Demented fun.
