The Los Angeles–based band Correatown is fronted by Angela Correa, who specializes in creating gauzy dream-pop with ample help from a backing band that exudes a seasoned finesse in its musicianship. The group's fourth studio album, Pleiades, opens with “Valparaiso,” an airy piece of indie folk-pop played with restraint and charm. Correa’s self-harmonies resonate with the rich saturation of its similar-sounding L.A. sister band Willow Willow. Some prickly piano notes spice up the following “Further,” which blends the gossamer '90s indie rock of Velocity Girl with a Bat for Lashes sophistication. But through all the cool analog textures and effects, it’s Correa’s winsome melodies that stand out. With songs like the romantic “Everything, All at Once” and the Southern California lullaby “Sunset & Echo,” it’s easy to understand why Correatown’s recordings have soundtracked hit TV shows like Grey’s Anatomy, Ugly Betty, and How I Met Your Mother. The darker-sounding “Isomer” deviates from the sunflared beauty, as Correa’s silky voice sings a fawning melancholia over syncopated handclaps and a menacing keyboard drone.
