Cory Branan has the kind of talent that’s made him all the rage among his fellow musicians, who’ve shown up in full force in order to get closer to the music. Whether it’s Jason Isbell, The Hold Steady’s Craig Finn, Caitlin Rose, or Austin Lucas providing backing vocals, it’s all in service of the fine songs that Missouri native Branan writes as naturally as breathing. His fourth album, No-Hit Wonder, features the sounds of a country-influenced musician who goes back decades to find the real C&W sounds. A tune like “All the Rivers in Colorado,” for example, sounds like a hit from the ‘70s that you can’t quite place. “You Make Me” kicks off as a tight country-rocker that’s apparently learned a thing or two from The Rolling Stones. The title track tells the tale of yet another musician who’s stuck in Lodi again, but the energy turns the tale into a bittersweet celebration, with Craig Finn and Steve Selvidge of The Hold Steady joining the final choruses for maximum impact.
