Consisting of guitarist Jack Sandham and drummer Wednesday Lyle, the U.K. rock and soul duo Cowbell play a modern version of the vintage pop and R&B they love. “Tallulah” opens with a super-catchy chorus that becomes more pronounced as “Hanging by a Thread” goes from a single, pulsing new wave note to a full harmonic explosion for the chorus. The tightly compressed (but never over-compressed) sound is reminiscent of the economical and locked-in rhythm section behind those ‘70s Steve Miller Band hits, but it's done here with the garage still in the records. The duo's soul and R&B edges are less obvious than their power pop love, but those are audible on the grungy “Love Got Me Down,” the ramshackle, Cramps-like “Mississippi,” and the call-and-response of “Scratch My Baby.” The ballad “Castle Walls” gives Lyle a breather from her manic drumming so she can sing from her heart. “All in Good Time” turns down the amps for a subtler shuffle. “Every Dog Has Its Day” further looks into Sandham’s soul. It's beautiful, affecting stuff.
