This third volume of Cowboy Junkies’ Nomad Sessions was recorded in just four days, and it has a bit of an end-of-the-world vibe. Guitarist Michael Timmins has his guitar set on stun-gun mode, and his sister Margo sings like she’s drowning in a river and struggling to get to the surface. “It’s Heavy Down Here” has a compelling nightmarish factor working in its favor. “3rd Crusade” comes closest to The Beatles’ “Come Together” for bluesy persuasion, while “Late Night Radio” has a conventional melody matched to a meditative-to-volcanic tension worthy of latter-day Talk Talk. “Sing in My Meadow” adds the distant ache of harmonica whiz Jeff Bird. “Hunted” and “I Move On” throw in psychedelic and blues guitar, while “A Bride’s Price” works out a dark garage blues reminiscent of The Black Keys. For a band working for more than 20 years, Cowboy Junkies sound even more vibrant and essential than at their onset.
