Cosmo's Factory finds Creedence Clearwater Revival perfecting their dance with the past and the present to a near-transcendent degree. Not only do they make the hits of Bo Diddley ("Before You Accuse Me") and Roy Orbison ("Ooby Dooby") sound completely contemporary, their cover of the Marvin Gaye smash "I Heard It Through the Grapevine" takes the tune someplace entirely new. CCR's swampy side has seldom been better served than on "Run Through the Jungle," and while "Who'll Stop the Rain" is as timeless an expression of sadness as you'll ever hear, "Up Around the Bend" and the country-fried "Lookin' Out My Back Door" are practically the textbook definition of jubilance.
