Details
[Edit]Da King & I's one and only album is mostly a laid-back jazz-hip-hop exploration. The title of the album is slightly misleading because this is not the deep thundering bass of jeep music but rather a smoothed out soulful journey. The debut single "Flip Da Script" was an East Coast hit and the follow-up single, "Tears," is an excellent hip-hop love lost/breakup record in the vein of the Pharcyde's "Passin' Me By." The album is filled with mostly lighthearted storytelling with a New York edge. The use of the horn sample was in vogue at the time and nearly every track is horn fueled. Most of the tracks are down to earth and accessible, reflecting a kinder, gentler hip-hop age. Although drawing comparisons to another DJ/MC duo, Pete Rock & CL Smooth, Da King & I have a unique style. This mellow album was largely slept on and the duo would never recover. ~ M.F. DiBella, Rovi
